Recently on You Quiz on the Block’s “Wildlife Control Unit” episode, a shocking story was shared about pets being abandoned at the airport after failing to pass quarantine. 😡
To make sure you don’t face a situation where you can’t board your flight with your pet due to missing paperwork, here’s a summary of the animal quarantine procedures at Incheon Airport that you must check before traveling abroad!
Procedures for Departing with Pets
Here are the key steps required when traveling overseas with your pet:
① Check the quarantine requirements of your destination
(Microchip, rabies antibody test certificate)
② Get vaccinations and a health certificate from a veterinary clinic
③ Obtain a quarantine certificate at Incheon Airport
① Check the Quarantine Requirements of Your Destination
The very first step is to confirm the quarantine regulations of the country you’re traveling to.
Requirements vary by country and may include your pet’s age, mandatory vaccinations, microchip, or limits on the number of accompanying pets.
Most countries require a microchip and rabies vaccination. For rabies shots, dogs and cats must be at least 90 days old, and they must enter the country before the vaccine expires. Make sure to confirm this well in advance!

Note: Some countries—including Hawaii, Australia, and Japan—require an import permit in advance before pets can enter.

② Vaccinations and Health Certificate at a Veterinary Clinic
Next, visit your veterinarian to confirm your pet is fit for air travel.
Depending on your destination’s regulations, your pet may need vaccinations, parasite treatment, and rabies antibody testing.
After completing these, fill out the necessary forms and receive a health certificate from your vet.

③ Obtain a Quarantine Certificate at Incheon Airport
With your health certificate ready, you’ll need to visit the Animal Quarantine Office at Incheon Airport for document review and a clinical inspection.
